August 1-2 Technopole

August is the main month for rain in Dakar and, on cue, a brief, heavy storm converted my local road to a river. At Technopole, the two skimmers are still the highlight.

Ruff numbers are increasing quickly and with 50 or so this is now the most numerous Palearctic wader. The first marsh sandpiper arrived on 1st and green sandpiper and black tern on 2nd. On the latter date the main lake was suddenly full of great white pelicans, with more than 400. I imagine these are birds returning north towards  Djoudj and other breeding sites.

Technopole is also a working landscape; the lush grass is being bagged up for the city’s livestock and fishing with hand nets busier as the lake level rises.
